May 6th Sports Update: AOL Reports Iranian Footballer Gholizadeh Suffers Cruciate Ligament Tear, Ending World Cup Participation. Gholizadeh played in all 3 group matches for Iran at the Qatar World Cup. He also featured in two friendlies in Turkey last March. Now, Iran is preparing for the June tournament in the US, facing New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in Group D. A second-place finish could lead to a match against the US in the Round of 16. At 30, Gholizadeh is with Polish giants Poznań Lech and was recently named Poland's League Player of the Month in April, one of the few Iranian players continuing in European club football. Iranian players are training in Tehran, with plans to move to Turkey next week for extended camps, now without Gholizadeh.
